In order to get the best quality for your sign, it is important to understand the artwork setup process and the variety of file types. Essentially, junk in = junk out. The end use of the artwork will always determine what file types are most appropriate.

Raster VS Vector
The primary difference between raster and vector filetypes is that rasterized files have a limited sizing ability, while vectorized files do not. This can best be illustrated with the following sample images (note how the vectored file has an unlimited amount of resolution):

The letter X with a 1" cap height.

500% magnification of the rastered image above.

500% magnification of the vectored letter

Vectored files can be used for any output that we have (routing, plotting, blasting, printing, etc), while rasterized files are only suitable for printing. The two can be combined for more cost-effective signs, as well.

Preferred Filetypes
Diversified Signs and Graphics currently operates on Adobe Illustrator 10.0 and Adobe Photoshop 7.0 for all graphics pre-production. Our preferred filetypes for vector artwork are .ai .pdf and .eps. Our preferred raster filetypes are .tif .eps and .psd. Other filetypes such as .jpg .gif, etc. are rarely of a sufficient quality, but can be used as a last resort option.

WARNING: Vector filetypes such as .ai, .eps, .pdf, etc. can sometimes contain embedded raster files. Please check before submission!

DPI (dots per inch)
DPI determines the amount of resolution, crispness and detail that a printed image will have. Generally-the higher, the better. For most signage being read at a medium distance, 150 dpi is more than sufficient. For signage being read from a closer distance, 300 dpi or higher is optimal. Anything lower than 150 dpi will start to get pixelated. Note the differences in detail in the images below.

Final Application
If you are planning your artwork to be used to route shapes and letters into signfoam, wood, metal, pvc, viny, sandblast mask, acrylic, or any other material, the final artwork must be in a vectored format.

If your artwork has full-color prints, photos, etc, or are planning for the image to be printed on any form of vinyl or banner material, either vector or raster files are appropriate.

Artwork Setup
If you do not have access to a vectored version of your artwork, an additional artwork conversion fee will be added to your order, depending on the complexity of the artwork that needs to be converted.

Outlining Text
If sending any files with text, please make sure that the text is outlined (vector) or flattened (raster) before submitting. This ensures that your artwork will be received and processed exactly as you set it up. Additionally, if you have any thick strokes around your images or text, please outline those as well.

If you feel your artwork is ready to be processed, or if you have any additional questions, please feel free to ask/send to art@diversified-signs.com
